About the Program

Carnegie Mellon's Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Human-Computer Interaction program is an opportunity for undergraduate students to spend a summer working with some of the world's leading Human-Computer Interaction faculty researchers. A number of projects are available in diverse areas at the intersection of psychology, computer science, human-computer interfaces and language technologies. Accepted students will work closely with CMU faculty and researchers on research problems with the potential for publication and significant impact on the future practice of interaction design.

Some of our past summer research  students have gone on to join top Ph.D. programs in human-computer interaction such as those at CMU, Berkeley, and the University of Washington; have published papers in major conferences; have won NSF graduate research fellowships; and have placed in the CRA's Outstanding Undergraduate award and ACM's student research competitions. We are excited to see what you can do!

What will you do?

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in human-computer interaction. Topics include: smart classroom sensors, software engineering for HCI and security, educational games, tools for citizen science, future of work, online health support groups, smartphone privacy tools, and accessibility. For more information visit the faculty projects page.

  • Spend 10 weeks at Carnegie Mellon University’s #1-ranked School of Computer Science.

  • Receive mentoring from world leaders in their fields.

  • Learn research skills in undergraduate seminars throughout the summer.

What will you get?

  • Stipend and housing supplement.

  • Social events throughout the summer (e.g., baseball game, barbeque, etc.).

You should apply if:

  • You are interested in research in human-computer interaction.

  • You have demonstrated success in introductory undergraduate computer science, psychology or design courses.

  • You are a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.

    • Note: Our major funding source, the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, will not support international students. However, international students may apply to work with one of our mentors and be funded from other sources. These students will not necessarily receive the same stipend as NSF funded students.

Salma Elsayed-Ali (William & Mary, class of 2019) enjoyed her experience in the program last summer. "The HCII program was undoubtedly one of the most memorable and decisive learning experiences I have participated in. Having the opportunity to discover more about and contribute to the cutting-edge research being conducted at the HCII was an amazing learning experience, one that has encouraged me to continue pursuing research in HCI in the future. I am beyond grateful for all the support my PhD mentor and faculty advisor in the OH!Lab gave me and to have gotten to know so many inspiring students and faculty from CMU and beyond."
