Das, Laput Win 2014 Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship

News

HCII PhD students Sauvik Das and Gierad Laput were one of nine teams to win the 2014 Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QinF) for their proposal "Everyday Objects for Physical Space Authentication." Das and Laput's idea explores using simple, everyday objects such as pens, wallets and watches as transient authenticators for physical spaces and systems.

The QInF focuses on recognizing, rewarding and mentoring innovative Ph.D. students across a broad range of technical research areas based on the company’s core values of innovation, execution and teamwork. The fellowship is open to students from a variety of top US and international schools who submit a proposal that’s evaluated by Qualcomm’s CRD engineers.

This year's QinF attracted 137 proposals from 18 schools. The HCII team was among 34 teams selected to present their work at Qualcomm Research, and one of only nine teams to receive a fellowship. As fellows, Das and Laput will collaborate with a Qualcomm engineer on their research and will receive funding for their work. For more on the QinF program, click here.
