MLK Writing Awards

MHCI student Charu Sharma is among 17 Pittsburgh-area high school and college students who will share their poetry and prose at Carnegie Mellon University's 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Writing Awards Ceremony on Monday, Jan. 18. Held annually since their founding in 1999, the MLK Writing Awards celebrate King's legacy by exploring personal narratives from local students that highlight their experiences with racial prejudice and discrimination. Awards are presented for poetry and prose at both the high-school and college level.

Sharma earned second place in the College Poetry category for her poem, "How I Came to Be American." In addition to sharing her work at the ceremony, Sharma will also receive a cash prize.
