Description

A personal introduction and overview of the drive to establish a strategic competency in design and usability at Emerson will be provided. Key short and long term initiatives will be presented. Initial projects delivering immediate impact through application of HCD methods will be discussed.

Speaker's Bio

David Parsons is the Director of the Human Centered Design Center of Excellence at Emerson Process Management. His new charter is to lead Emerson’s push into improved human interface design quality and consistency for hardware and software products. His office is in Pittsburgh, PA at the Carnegie Mellon University Human-Computer Interaction Institute, where he coordinates his activities with the Emerson Software Excellent Center located in Hamburg Hall and reaches out to dispersed company management and development partners worldwide. Now that his position is established, he looks forward to intensifying development synergistic relationships with the academic community at CMU to assist in the realization of this mission and in progression of the HCI field into a primarily engineering driven business.

David recently relocated to the area with his family from Rochester, NY where he served as Corporate Director of the Industrial Design/Human Interface Department. In prior roles, he served as User Interface Designer/Strategist whereby he established innovative direction for the company’s new line of digital multifunction products, and led creation of the first ever company-wide interface design architectural standards in collaboration with Xerox PARC. Subsequently he built and managed the company’s user interface design and usability groups in concert with a shift toward more software intensive complex systems offerings. He is a 1987 graduate of the Syracuse University Industrial Design program, and has completed a wide range of independent studies in the areas of advanced design and strategic design management. He holds approximately 20 US patents with several more pending.
