Season three of the "Does Compute" podcast brings listeners into conversations about innovation, safety and accessibility. The podcast, a collaboration between the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science and GeekWire Studios, explores how the SCS community is using computer science to build useful stuff that works.

This week, Associate Professor Patrick Carrington joins podcast host Steph Strickland for the episode, "Agency Is About Having A Voice."

Agency is top of mind for the Human-Computer Interaction Institute faculty member.

"Our number one goal is to support and maintain the agency that we have," said Carrington. "The (AXLE) Lab's philosophy is 'everyday accessible experiences.'"

From wearable fitness trackers to smart thermostats, technology is only as useful as it is accessible. Carrington shares examples of his human-centered work, explains the importance of being proactive in this space, and gives examples of innovation with everyday access, such as following a recipe while cooking or changing the room temperature with a thermostat.

"It’s always fun and interesting to talk about how people can engage with accessibility, in both remediating issues and designing for future interfaces," Carrington said about the podcast conversation. “'Everyday accessibility' often gets the mundane label, but it was nice to talk about it with more of an eye toward future systems."
