Season three of the "Does Compute" podcast brings listeners into conversations about innovation, safety and accessibility. The podcast, a collaboration between the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science and GeekWire Studios, explores how the SCS community is using computer science to build useful stuff that works.
This week, Human-Computer Interaction Institute Professor Chris Harrison joins podcast host Steph Strickland to discuss privacy versus convenience, the current speed of research in industry and academia, and what might be next in contextually-responsive AI systems.
"It's always fun to speculate about the future of computing," Harrison said about the podcast conversation. "Although we can make fairly good predictions about how technology will advance in the near term, culture and fashion can shift quickly and in unexpected ways."
As wearable technology usage has surged over the last decade, so have concerns surrounding data privacy, sharing, and regulatory oversight.
"Consumers do care about privacy, but it’s not absolute. Regulation is going to have to play a role to make sure we can maximize the benefit of AI and other emerging technologies," said Harrison.
