Problem

PACS workstations are used primarily to assist radiologists and other clinicians in creating patient reports and diagnosis based on a variety of medical imaging modalities. Because of recent advancements in the fidelity of medical imaging devices, users of PACS are faced with increasingly large and detailed data sets that must be explored before a diagnosis can be reached. This has led to increased incidences of repetitive stress injuries among active PACS users.

The goal for this seven month endeavor has been to design an improved user experience for GE’s PACS, including minimizing mouse clicks and movements (factors for RSI) while maintaining efficient and accurate work practices. This effort was divided into two related tasks:

A typical environment of a radiologist's workstation -- dark environment, a monitor for the work list, 2 monitors for viewing medical images, keyboard, mouse and a dictaphone within reach.
