Problem Description
Due to the large data sets typically encountered, radiologists average high levels of mouse activity (clicking, scrolling, etc.) which leads to an increased risk for developing repetitive stress injuries. "The same ergonomic rules used in the wider occupational world should apply to radiologists, but " ... "unlike secretaries and other office workers, radiologists don't typically have individualized desks or chairs. One-size workstations do not fit every size." [Radiologists Encounter Repetitive Stress Injuries: DiagnosticImaging.com, June 3, 2006]
While changing the physical environment and input devices is beyond the scope of this project, it is critical that development of next-generation PACS minimize mouse activity, such as clicking and scrolling. At the same time, efficiency is extremely valued by PACS users. Decreasing reading time and providing shortcuts to users will be a huge win for the design of this system.
The primary focus for this project is on the next-generation system. However, in the meantime, users are utilizing the GE Centricity RA-1000 product. In order to provide an immediate impact, a usability evaluation of the current product has also been completed.
Jason updates the team's summer schedule while Fahd, Shae and Madhu work at the tasks at hand.
