Building an Affinity Diagram at the Focus Setting Meeting

Our main goal for the first half of the Spring semester was to get acquainted with how Intellectual Property(IP) is created, managed and protected at MEDRAD, and what role the Bound Lab Notebook(BLN) plays in those processes.

To define our research territory, we held a focus-setting meeting that included our team and our MEDRAD project sponsors from the innovations side, the IP legal side and IT. At the meeting, we asked everyone to think of any questions and/or concerns they had about the project and capture them on sticky notes. We had many questions, and as it turned out, there were some we didn’Äôt know to ask, due to our limited knowledge of the domain. We then clustered the post-it’Äôs into an affinity diagram, which resulted in two focus statements.

Focus
1. How do lab notebooks fit into the IP Process?
2. How do we design a system that fits into MEDRAD employee’Äôs current tools and culture
