Iconographic Navigation System

This is the in-car navigation portion of our system. While the driver is performing a navigation task, we find that a turn by turn system that utilizes a full Heads Up Display (HUD) is a good communication method to express driving directions.

  • "high arrow" - this arrow appears when the driver is approaching a turn and has to make it
  • intersection - this appears from the beginnign of the route to help users visualize how the turn looks like.
  • directional arrow - this appears from the beginning of the route to help users know ahead of time what direction they should be looking to turn.

The graphics appear on the windshield in a three step warning system that attempts to resemble a friend giving directions to the driver sitting in the passenger's seat. We take into consideration the following factors for notification timing: lane position, traffic density, driver's speed, driver's previous driving statistics and preferences, weather/visibitliy. A sound notification also accompanies the 3-step warning system.

step 1

step 1 appears just as soon as the driver starts the navigation task. The driver sees a directional arrow that is hollow. The exact mapping of the street intersection in a top-down view. A distance meter showing how long the route segment will be until the driver has to make the next turn. The distance meter disappears after approximately 10 seconds to avoid distraction that will occur if it stays on the numbers will decrease rapidly or avoid giving erroneous infomration that is not real time.
step 2

step 2 appears when the driver should be looking to make the turn. notice here that the directional arrow has been filled in to signify a change and increased urgency. A distance meter shows up for 10 seconds again, only this time it is updated. This tells the driver to make necssary changes such as chaging lanes, signalling, and other actions required to take the turn.
step 3

step 3 appears when the driver should be already in the position to make the turn. This step shows a high arrow superimposed on the intersection in front of the driver where the turn is taking place. A distance meter is again showing how close the driver is to making the turn.
